WINERY – Peri, winemakers in Castenedolo from 1946

Bigogno Winery  is extended on 9 hectares of vineyards, on the hill of Castenedolo, 10 km from Brescia and about 3 km from Brescia Est tool booth for motorway A4 Milan-Venice. It has grown for 30 years thanks to passion for a constant qualitative improvement and has recently developed hospitality and welcome.

Our philosophy is linked to passion for safety and protection of a territory that is in danger of losing its secular vocation and identity agricultural and wine-producing.

From here the choice of an agronomic management of vineyards that follows severely the precept of Measure F for low environmental impact; the choice of cellar machinery state-of-the-art is combined to preservation of a vast collection of old tools, some of them exposed in the permanent museum, others exposed only during particular celebration of local tradition with celebration in the winery.

The will of sustain wine tradition in Castenedolo has made sure that Winery Bigogno supported in 2000 the “birth” of one of the three “Bresciane” Routes of Wine, Hills of Longobards, in addition to support in 2003 the foundation of De.C.O Castenedolo (Council Denomination of Origin), the first in Italy referred to wine.

It is opened from Tuesday to Saturday for sale, but winery is also opened for a tour for assayers and keen on rural culture.

De.C.O. CASTENEDOLO – Safeguard for market niche and quality production

Until 70s plantation of vine was one of the most “in vogue” agricultural practice on hill, as it is shown by some historical documents that talked about our hill, or as the historical printing press of 1700 preserved in a farmstead called “Cantinù” near Capodimonte shows.

But from the end of 70s artisan-industrial development of the area and inadequate profitability from cultivation of the land led up to gradual abandonment of vineyards: lots of them were eradicated and, since people cannot cultivate anything else because of soil was not irrigated, gradually one of the most beautiful and suggestive area of the hill was abandoned and decayed.

Also, the lack of a prestigious denomination that could incentivize the survival of old farming traditions, played an important role of quickening the abandon of viticulture.

This is the reason why in December 2002 Municipal Administration of Castenedolo, with passion and hope, accepted and approved municipal regulations for the regard of local agricultural activities, creating De.C.O.

Bigogno Winery  in 2003 asked and obtained for its wines De.C.O Castenedolo.

Luigi Veronelli, well-known wine and food critic, recently died, on 16th April 2003 wrote on Corriere della Sera: “De.C.Os are the realization of the last part of my life. I am sure that it is the most important one. […]. In fact, Mayors, with approval of town council, have the right and obligation to attest agricultural production”.

With the approval of constitutional law number 3 in force as of 18th October 2001, districts can legislate for safeguard of the products of the territory, having at their disposal a “tool” that can safeguard and value products that have not denomination or are in danger of extinction. This is considered one of the new paths for the safeguard and promotion of agricultural products and of food craft.

De.C.O is not to be considered as a useless overlap to others well-known I.G.P, D.O.C, D.O.P, I.G.T, but the fact that it links the name of the district to a well-defined product avoids that this disappears and protect the consumer from the origin of the product.

Luigi Veronelli was the first who made political system aware of the opportunity to create De.C.O, because of its advantages in regard to safeguard and promotion of local culture and cultivation.

Also for this reason, Veronelli when knew about the situation of viticulture on hill of Castenedolo, accepted with joy the invitation to visit Bigogno Winery  in 2003, showing satisfaction and approval for the diligence to safeguard local viticulture.
